Italian Films I’m Watching: Round 1
Here are some recommendations of Italian films I’m watching this week!
La Chimera (2023) dir. Alice Rohrwacher
Plot: This film follows young Arthur’s (played by Josh O’Connor) quest to find his lost love Beniamina while re-kindling friendships along the way. To Arthur’s better judgment, Arthur realizes that his search for the one he yearns for may be shrouded by his own denial.
Most noteworthy: Josh O’Connor’s ability to pick up Italian to fluency by immersing himself into the culture and living in Italy. Also, the beautiful blending of the 35mm film with the 16mm film courtesy of Hélène Louvart.
The Hand of God (2021) dir. Paolo Sorrentino
Plot: This semi-autobiographical piece depicts everyday life of 17-year-old Fabietto (played by Filipo Scotti) in Napoli, Italy, until the unthinkable shakes his world, sending him into a spiral of introspection and wanting to find life’s purpose. After being saved by football legend, Diego Maradona, we see the journey of a young man grappling with how a hometown can bring so much joy, yet so much despair.
Most noteworthy: How the lack of an ongoing score heightened emotions we experience as an audience.
Io Sono L’Amore (I am Love) (2009) dir. Luca Guadagnino
Plot: Emma (played by Tilda Swinton) is a sophisticated woman who, while maintaining her status and social standing, aches for a simpler life. As a mother of 3 and wife to one of the most prominent Italian textile giants, her life is transformed after meeting one of her son’s friends, a simple chef.
Most noteworthy: The Russian-Italian accent Tilda Swinton absolutely mastered to show us that she had both worlds within her. Also, special praise for Yorick Le Saux’s cinematography.
